Elizabeth, originally called " Elizabethtown " and part of the Elizabethtown Tract, was founded in 1664 by English settlers. The town was not named for Queen Elizabeth I as many people may assume, but rather for Elizabeth, wife of Sir George Carteret, one of the two original Proprietors of the colony of New Jersey.
Linden was incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on January 1, 1925, replacing both Linden Township and Linden Borough, based on the results of a referendum held on November 8, 1923. [23] The city's name derives from linden trees brought from Germany
In 1877 Scotch Plains divorced itself from Westfield, and became Fanwood Township. In 1895, one mile of land in the center separated itself, and became Fanwood Borough. It has remained separate ever since.

In January 1777, rebels were victorious against the British in the Battle of Spanktown, which resulted in the death of some 100 British troops. The battle was named this after Rahway's original name given to it by the first settlers, Spanktown
In the late 1890s, the New Orange Industrial Association purchased land in Cranford and Union n that was subdivided into building lots. The firm brought in several large industries and lured Upsala College from Brooklyn with an offer of cash and free land for its campus.
